Full Description
A number of post medieval features were uncovered during an archaeological excavation undertaken at the former site of the Post Office on Biggin Street, Dover. A pit lined with lime mortar was located within trench 3, this produced a wide range of sixteenth century pottery including cauldrons, a frying pan and read earthen ware cooking vessels. It is a large assemblage and is typical of the period, it is likely to have been utilised in the farmhouse shown to have occupied this area on a map dating to 1581. The pit was truncated by two later post medieval features one of which contained a poorly preserved timber box. Features of a similar date were also located in trenches 7 and 8; in trench 7 a chalk floor was identified while in trench 8 a chalk and brick wall. These features represent examples of features associated with domestic and workshop areas, two further wall structures which are associated with chalk floors, located in trench 10, are also likely to have been for this purpose.
