Full Description

A wide shallow south-west to north-east medieval ditch found during Channel Tunnel Rail Link excavations 2001-2003. The ditch was revealed during two investigations, the first portion ran SW-NE and corresponded closely with the existing boundary between Springhead Nursery and the field to the north-west. This ditch was c 6.50 m wide and 1.25 m deep with an open U-shaped profile, with no evidence for re-cutting. The ditch contained five medieval sherds of probable 13th century date. A small nearby scoop also contained medieval pottery. Approximately 60 m to the north-east of this ditch were parts of what may have been the same feature, represented by two lengths of ditch. They were, however, on a slightly different alignment. The first of these two lengths was only 1m wide whereas the second length was up to 5 m wide and rather more sinuous, perhaps created in part by water run-off where the ditch joined the Ebbsfleet channel.
