Full Description
Parts of two Medieval chalk block walls and an associated robber trench were located during an archaeological evaluation and watching brief undertaken at Prince of Wales House, Princes Street, Dover by Wessex Archaeology in 2008 ahead of the redevelopment of the site. The first wall and associated foundation trench cut a Medieval levelling layer at the western end of Trench 1. The wall was constructed of small roughly hewn chalk blocks lain without bonding material. Only parts of the wall survived, the rest having been robbed out and the stone used elsewhere. The robbing of the wall was represented by a shallow north-south running backfilled robbing cut. This had been heavily truncated by modern levelling and pitting but the feature was 2.5m wide and contained three fills all of which contained chalk rubble and sherds of Medieval pottery. At the eastern end of the trench more fragmentary remains of a Medieval wall were uncovered. Again this wall was constructed of unmortared chalk, no dateable material was uncovered in association with this wall though its foundation trench cut a garden soil which contained fragments of Medieval pottery.
