Monument record TR 04 SW 113 - Medieval settlement area north of Sevington railhead

Summary

During archaeological work prior to construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link possible 12th century buildings and a possible field system or rear of medieval properties was found. Linear features were tentatively identified as horticultural bedding trenches or part of one or possibly two timber buildings of late 12th or 13th century date. Slots and post-holes of a possible 12th century building were located 60m south east of Orchard Cottage, Sevington. The identification of a possible field system was based on the discovery of ditches located to the rear of Maytree Cottages but this may have also been the rear of medieval properties fronting Church Road.

Full Description

An evaluation of 11 trenches, commissioned by Union Railways Limited, was carried out in three phases by the Museum of London Archaeology Service, in November 1997, south-east of Ashford, kent. Four of the trenches located archaeological features.

Several linear features located to the east of the A2070 may be horticultural bedding trenches or form part of one or possibly two timber buildings of late 12th or 13th century date. Slots and post-holes of a possible 12th century building were located 60m south-east of Orchard Cottage, Sevington. Ditches located to the rear of Maytree Cottages may either formpart of a medieval field system or be the rear of medieval properties fronting Church Road.

A post-medieval pit and slot located to the rear of Maytree cottages were of 16th century date and probably relate to the cottages.

Immediately to the east of the A2070 a north-south aligned mortar and ragstone road or trackway was probably of 19th or 20th century in date. (1-2)
