In 1997 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a geophysical survey and an evaluation on land at Popes Lane, Sturry. An Early to Mid Saxon site, consisting of sunken-featured buildings, trackways, enclosures and hearths, was found. One sunken-featured building was partially excavated, revealing a possible hearth location within the structure. Insufficient material was found to indicate if this was a domestic building, but the presence of slag from one of the fills suggests an alternative industrial use. Pottery recovered from the structure dated to the 6th and 7th centuries. Adjacent to this structure were possible remains of other timber buildings and also four more possible sunken-featured buildings. A geophysical survey in 1998 carried out by Oxford Archaeotechnics identified further possible buildings, trackways and enclosures. (1-5)
