Full Description
In 1999 Archaeology South-East carried out an evaluation and an excavation in advance of redevelopment on the former Shepherd Neame and Provender Mill sites at Belvedere Road, Faversham. Two broad periods of activity were identified: 13th-14th century and 18th-19th century, both principally represented by rubbish deposits and/or buried land surfaces. A series of test trenches across the probable bank of Faversham Creek located two sections of wooden revetment, one of which overlay a c13th century refuse deposit. However, no conclusive date was obtained for the structures, as 19th century material was recovered at the same level to landward: either representing later reworking or a post-medieval revetment incorporating residual 13th century rubbish. The state of preservation of the wooden structures was extremely good, and the favourable conditions within the lower alluvium suggest that organic remains of all classes would be equally well preserved. Widespread 20th century industrial remains, and a small area of possible prehistoric activity were also recorded. (1-2)
