Full Description

Remains of 2 ditch features on foreshore. Kiln soil and 1 kiln, late 1st to 2nd century. At base of eroding bank and into exposed firm clay, horizon of small flint fragments most exposed to fire, and some small pottery fragments. At mudlfat level in firm clay local are areas of peat with flint flakes. The foreshore here produces frequent Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age flint flakes/tools (1). Complete plan of 'Barksore' kiln obtained by Upchurch Arch Group after erosion, c1970 (2).
