Monument record TR 26 NE 1042 - Bronze Age-Iron Age settlement, near Nether Hale Farm, St. Nicholas at Wade parish

Summary

A large rectilinear cropmark enclosure near Nether Hale Farm was previously identifed from aerial photographs. During excavations at this location in 1979 a double ditched enclosure dating to the 10th to 15th centuries was revealed (see TR 26 NE 74). The remains of shallow ditches dating to the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age were found below this. The features were dated based on the discovery of Deverel-Rimbury type pottery within their fill. The site has been interpreted as a settlement or possibly a farmstead.Traces of this enclosure and further associated enclosures to the west have been mapped from aerial photographs.

Full Description

Rectilinear cropmark. Photographs (1,2).

Rectilinear cropmark. Excavation in 1979 revealed a double ditched enclosure (TR 26 NE 74). Underneath this and showing as shallow ditches was the remains of a late bronze age/early iron age settlement or farmstead with Deverel-Rimbury type pottery.(3,4)

The cropmark traces of the late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age phase of this complex of enclosures can be seen on aerial photographs. Further enclosures extend to the west of this and the overlying medieval double-ditched enclosure representing further parts of this earlier settlement phase. A funnel-like or V-shaped enclosure with an entrance at its SW apex forms the south-western extent of this complex.
