Monument record TQ 77 NE 1045 - The earthwork of a small oval mound circa 9m by 8m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947

Summary

The earthwork of a small oval mound circa 9m by 8m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This probable post medieval livestock refuge mound was the only one situated on the edge of Ryestreet Common and has since been levelled. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. It has also been suggested that it could be related to salt production in earlier periods. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
