Monument record TQ 77 NE 1046 - One of three probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated near the centre of Cooling Marshes

Summary

The earthwork of a roughly oval mound circa 18m by 10m is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This is one of three probable post medieval livestock refuge mounds situated near the centre of Cooling Marshes (see also NMR 1534212 and NMR 416600) and appears to have been levelled by 2007. Refuge mounds provided an area of high ground for livestock to occupy in the event of a flood and numerous refuge mounds were built on the marshes of the Hoo Peninsula. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
