Monument record TQ 77 NW 1108 - ?Post-medieval stock refuge mound, Cliffe Marshes

The earthwork remains of an oval mound measuring 13m x 8m, centred at TQ 7352 7740. This is one of five such mounds noted together in an earlier monument record (Monument Number: 416724), and is itself one of two adjacent mounds within one field in Cliffe Marshes. This site is probably an example of a 19th century or earlier stock refuge mound constructed on low-lying pasture within the marshlands of the Hoo Peninsula and the margins of the Thames Estuary. These mounds have been referred to and identified in contemporary writings (Spurrell, 1885). This was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
