Maritime record TQ 97 SE 1042 - Remains of unidentified vessel, visible 1998, used to create sea defence

Summary

Remains of the westernmost and at the landward end of a line of 10 abandoned steel lighters, likely to be of 20th century date, located in the inter-tidal zone immediately north of a patch of shingle. They are recorded in this position from 1972 (but may have been abandoned earlier). All the wrecks stretch in a line running north from the beach between Royal Oak Point to the west and Paddy's Point to the east, and are said to mark the eastern boundary of Minster beach. Hydrographic Office record of the wreck (1).

Remains of unidentified vessel, visible 1998, used to create sea defence (2). Additional photogrpahs of the wreck (3-10).

Vertical Datum: LAT (1)

15-FEB-1972: Obstructions running parallel to line on chart from 51 25 31N 000 49 53E, consisting mainly of 11 steel lighters about 80ft long by 25ft wide out to 900ft offshore. (1) [This record covers all 11 lighters].

10-NOV-1982: Shown as line of obstructions centred on 51 25.31N 000 49.53E. (2)

Described as line of obstructions lying N-S, length 280 metres, position by WGS 84 51 25.628N 000 49.813E. (2)

The westernmost of the landward group and seen to lie immediately north of the shingle patch, consistent with the charted position in (2). The wreck measures 22m long x 6m wide and lies bows to the north-east. (3)

This line of wreckage said to mark the eastern boundary of Minster beach. (4)
