Full Description

One of two World War 2 surface air raid shelters built at the rear of Cobham Primary School. This record refers to the eastern shelter which measures approximately 14m (l) x 3.8m (W) x 2.4m (h). The roof is 13-22 cm thick and the walls are 34cm thck. The shelter comprises a single long room. Capacity 50 persons. The western shelter is recorded as a separate monument (TQ 66 NE 74) [1]

No documented construction dates have been found for either of the shelters. A record in school Log notes the receipt of plans for one shelter on 18th October 1940, and electrical connection to " the school shelters" on 18th March 1942 (Terminus Ante Quem). No shelters were present in 1939. It is suggested that at least one of the shelters was probably complete by the end of 1940. [1]
