Full Description
One of two World War 2 surface air raid shelters built at the rear of Cobham Primary School. This record refers to the western shelter, which is smaller than it's eastern conterpart, measuring 10.65m (l) x 3.7(m). In all other aspects the two shelters are comparable. The shelter comprises a single long room. Capacity 50 persons. The eastern shelter is recorded as a separate monument (TQ 66 NE 73). [1]
No documented construction dates have been found for either of the shelters. A record in school Log notes the receipt of plans for one shelter on 18th October 1940, and electrical connection to " the school shelters" on 18th March 1942 (Terminus Ante Quem). No shelters were present in 1939. It is suggested that at least one of the shelters was probably complete by the end of 1940. [1]
