Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation undertaken at Ebbsfleet in 2005, a fragment of walling or wall foundation was uncovered. it consisted of at least one surviving course of undress chalk blocks and flint nodules which was aligned NW-SE. it probably represents the foundations of a structure within the cemetery (located to the south) such as a curtain wall, pedestal or buttress. The stone work had some pottery fragments incorporated into it which appeared to be of a broad Roman date. By comparison with the ditches the top of the structure survived at 3.85m aOD, only 0.3m below the ground level. A possible demolition deposit containing CBM and chalk fragments, as well as larger pottery and brick and Tegula fragments was located nearby. The artefactual remains point towards a tile roofed flint built structure. (1)
