Full Description

A series of potentially Neolithic - Early Bronze Age pit and post hole features, recorded between 1997 - 1999 during excavations in connection with the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. (1, 2)

In 1999 Museum of London Archaeology Service carried out an excavation at Temple East of Springhead as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link works. Neolithic or Early Bronze Age material and features were found along a spring line in a now dry valley. A post-built rectangular structure was constructed on the north side of a palaeochannel. The floor within this structure had burnt flint fragments, charcoal, struck flints flakes and charred grains associated with it. Additional pits and post holes probably also relate to this period of activity. A series of bowl shaped pits were found along the spring line. They may have formed naturally (though the method is unclear) or been dug to collect water. Occupation of the site may have been seasonal, in the drier months of the year. (3)
