Full Description

Cropmarks of a hollow way and a possible trackway are visible in the field lying immediately northwest of Upstreet on 1980s RCHME oblique aerial photographs [1-2].

A wide ditched feature, interpreted as a hollow way, initially follows a similar course to the Roman road (MWX43012), initially obscuring its southern ditch, then curves south-eastwards, towards the alignment of present road, finally flowing into the present road. The other feature is composed of two parallel ditches and is visible running for 180m aligned NNW-SSE. This crosses the alignment of the Roman road but appears to abut the hollow way. These ditches may represent field boundaries abutting the hollow way or a trackway.

The features are interpreted as post-Roman in date as the hollow way partially overlies cropmarks of the southern side of the Roman road and the possible trackway crosses it without an apparent break. The hollow way may represent an earlier version of the kink away from the original course of the Roman road that is visible in the present road through Upstreet.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
