Monument record MWX43178 - Boundary features, Stourmouth Valley

Summary

Shallow earthworks are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. They are interpreted as lost elements of the field layout shown on historic ordinance Survey mapping, itself of probable late post-medieval date. Modern aerial photographs indicates that all features have been plough-levelled.

Full Description

Shallow earthworks are visible on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. The earthworks comprise a short ditch, 86m long, and two short near-parallel banks, both 60m long; all features have an approximately E-W alignment. They are interpreted as elements of field systems created on land reclaimed from the Wantsum Channel from the 11th century onwards. The earthworks appear to be on similar alignments to the field layout shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping, itself of probable late post-medieval date, and may represent lost elements of this system. Examination of modern aerial photographs indicates that they have been plough-levelled [2].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
