Full Description
WWII slit trench and three gun pits, situated on the Pegwell Bay coast, visible in military aerial photographs.
The zigzag slit trench extends 82m NE-SW along the coast just behind the beach. Two circular gun pits, probably constructed with sandbags and with internal diameters of around 2.6m, are located at the SW extent of the slit trench, one on either side of the trench. These military features are first visible in February 1941 [1] and have been mapped from this series. The slit trench is still visible in 1946 but is gone by April 1950 [3].
By May 1942 [2] the eastern gun pit has been dismantled and appears to be an open circular pit. Another gun pit has been constructed by May 1942 [2], located 15m to the NE of the other gun pits. It is smaller in plan with an internal diameter of 2m. The remaining gun pits are no longer visible by April 1950 [3].
These features are located adjacent to other military coastal defence features (MWX43182, MWX43183, MWX43185) and are part of the overall coastal defence measures that were in place to prevent enemy invasion during WWII.
