Full Description

WWII gun emplacement and associated military buildings, situated beside the beach on Sandwich Bay, north of Deal. The circular gun emplacement has a diameter of 9.3m with a central structural pintle on which the gun was attached. Directly behind this are three buildings - a Nissen hut measuring 11m by 5m, and two rectangular buildings measuring 6m by 5m and 3.3m by 3.2m. Just over 40m to the north of the gun emplacement is an open structure measuring 6.4m by 6m, and is likely to be an ammunitions store.
These features were mapped from military aerial photographs taken in August 1941 [1], but were first visible in February 1941 [2]. All the structures have been removed by February 1946 [3], whereas the gun emplacement is still visible as an earthwork in April 2007 [4].
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
