Full Description
WWII complex of coastal defence features, on the coast of Sandwich Bay, north of Deal, comprising gun emplacements, military buildings, pillboxes, barbed wire, beach scaffolding and anti-tank cubes. A length of barbed wire, measuring over 1.4km, is visible running parallel to field boundaries behind a series of military defence features on the coast of Sandwich Bay. The wire was first visible and has been mapped from military aerial photographs taken in February 1941 [1] and June 1942 [2]. It has been removed by Fenruary 1946 [3]. The barbed wire may have served as another line of defence in the event of an invasion, but also to prevent civilian movement onto the beach.
Another length of barbed wire (measuring 2km) is visible running parallel to the coastline through the golf course, and provided a further line of defence. It was first visible August 1941 [4] and mapped from photographs taken in February 1942 [6].
Child records have been created for the individual military features bounded by the barbed wire on the west, beach scaffolding to the east (MWX43276) and the anti-tank cubes to the south (MWX4196). Roads and tracks are apparent across the landscape and link up the various individual features. They are first visible by August 1941 [4] and more to the south is visible by June 1942 [2]. They are no longer apparent by February 1946 [5].
See the children records for more details on the types of defence features apparent within this area. A transcription of all the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
