Full Description
Three closely situated WWII gun pits within the Great Farthingloe Anti-Aircraft Battery. Positioned in between the heavy anti-aircraft guns and the accommodation camp, the gun pits are possibly constructed of sandbags and are certainly placed in a circular formation and possibly part of an early defence system. The gun pits all of a similar size, between 5.5m and 6m were first observed from RAF aerial photography and mapped from December 1941 [1].
The gun pit to the north was no longer evident by June 1942 [2]. The two other gun pits to the south were last observed in June1942 [3] and had been destroyed by August 1945 [4].
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
