Full Description
This heavy anti-aircraft battery is situated at Great Farthingloe was observed from aerial photographs from December 1941 [1] to August 1945 [2]. It consisted of a four gun-emplacement battery with central command post, a GL mat (gun laying radar) to the west, storage and magazine buildings, barracks, bunkers and air raid shelters to the north and an accommodation camp with storage facilities to the east connected by a road and track way.
Other smaller associated defence features within the military complex include: pillboxes, banked enclosures, bomb craters, slit trench's of various sizes, gun pits and Nissen huts .
Roads and trackways linking the components of the military site and the outlying landscape were first observed in December 1941 [1] over an area of 1km square from the Samphire Hoe cliffs to the south to the military site to the north. Although much of the road systems and trackways are still visible on Google earth [3] the barbed wire was moved and modified during the duration of the war and has since been removed completely by August 1968 [4].
See linked child records for more information regarding the components of the military site.
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
