Full Description
WWI firing range visible on aerial photography taken in 1941, 1945 and 1946 [1, 2, 3 and 4], located in Dover. The site spanned 480m x 80m with earthworks spaced between 80m and 90m apart. From NW to SE was a ditch flanked by two banks, then a lone ditch, another ditch flanked by banks, a bank on the W side and a ditch, a lone ditch and then three banks of increasing size towards the E. The ditches were just visible as parchmarks on aerial photography taken in 1978 [5]. Some of the earthworks were still visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2007 [6]. Slit trenches (MWX43581) overlay the site and a section of WWI trenching is arranged along the firing range itself, though this trenching may represent WWI dugouts which form part of the range itself, or reuse of existing trenching. The site also overlapped the Langdon Coast Artillery Searchlights (MKe17260 and MKe17261).
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
