Monument record MWX43590 - Earthworks by the New Cut, east of Sandwich

Summary

A series of substantial banks and ditches are visible lying either side of the New Cut on 1940s aerial photographs. The many of the earthworks follow a course either roughly parallel or perpendicular to the New Cut, constructed in 1548, and may represent contemporary flood banks and drains. Examination of recent aerial photographs does not show conclusively whether these features remain as earthworks

Full Description

A series of substantial banks and ditches are visible lying either side of the New Cut on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1-2]. The earthworks cover an area c.800m (NW-SE) by c.200m (SW-NE); they range between c.10-15m wide and many follow a course either roughly parallel or perpendicular to the New Cut. These earthworks appear to relate to the New Cut, constructed in 1548, and may represent contemporary elements of water management such as flood banks and drains.

Examination of recent aerial photographs does not show conclusively whether these features remain as earthworks [2].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
