Full Description
WWII large cut feature of unknown function visible on aerial photography taken in 1942 and 1945 [1 and 2], located in Dover. This feature was 20.5m x 8m at maximum dimensions and formed an elongated, irregular shape. It was possibly the result of subsidence on the slopes of Western Heights, and seems too regular for bomb damage. The ditch lay 20m W of the North Centre Bastion of Western Heights (MKE7019 and NMR 468101). The feature was no longer visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 [3] when the site was seen to be under grassland.
This site lay in an area of WWII features, alongside lay one potential small barrage balloon site (MWX43606), a military building (MWX43605), a large cut feature (MWX43604) and a potential gun position or shelter (MWX43603).
A transcription of the feature recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
