Full Description

A section of Second World War anti tank obstruction is visible as an earthwork, soilmarks and structures on aerial photographs taken in 1942. Some of the structures have been removed and some of the earthworks backfilled on aerial photographs taken in 1945. The remainder of the ditch is backfilled on aerial photographs taken in 1966, and the ditch is partly visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 2006, though the earthwork ditch has been backfilled and is visible as soilmarks on aerial photographs taken in 2006. This section of anti tank obstruction is centred on TR 2469 3893 and extends between TR 2402 3848 and TR 2508 3831. The western most 50 metres is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1945. The earthwork ditch is 5 metres wide, but the soilmark in 1945 is circa 25 metres wide, caused by the backfilling of the ditch. The site comprises a combination of anti tank ditches, anti tank pimples and anti tank cubes. A pillbox is located on the northern side of the ditch where is crosses Cauldham Lane (1417699). This section of anti tank ditch is part of a much more extensive system of ditches which extend around the north of Folkestone and out of the project area of the South East Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment (1-3).
