Full Description
This length of scaffolding is roughly centred at TR 0185 1746, to the south of two extensive Second World War Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) ranges (Monument Numbers 1539771, 1539764). The scaffolding extends for approximately 5.3km WNW to ESE along the seafront. After small breaks at each end of this stretch, it continues along the coast both to the east and west (Monument Numbers 1538537, 1539800). There is an in-turned entrance through the scaffolding at TR 0429 1698, which gives access to a small contemporary military site surrounded by barbed wire (Monument Number 1539772). A building or structure of some sort occupies this gap, presumably controlling access through it. Approximately 50m to the east, at TR 0435 1697, the scaffolding is interrupted by a coastal battery concealed under a mound of shingle. This structure is included in the record for the military site just mentioned. The scaffolding appears to have been removed without trace by the time of the vertical aerial photographs of 1958 (1-2).
