Monument record TR 15 NW 633 - Roman Shrine: Temple Precinct
Summary
(TR 14705769) Probable Roman Temple Precinct excavated by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1980-1. The remains of a small rectangular timber framed building with a narrow ambulatory and an inner cella (both with clay floors was perhaps a small shrine located on the CB/R5 site and was probably demolished in the third century, at a time when the porticoes also seem to have been partly dismantled and a final sequence of courtyards laid over them. If this buildig was a shrine when it may indicate that the enclosure could have contained not only a major classical temple but a number of smaller shrines.
