Summary

The earthwork remains of what is believed to be the shelter or bunker associated with and lying immediately to the south of the the twin WW1 searchlights (NMR Monument Number: 1542798). Both are situated on the coast, just above the beach immediately to the north-east of Grain Fort. The shelter appeared as a penannular earthen bank open to the south-west. Both the shelter and searchlights have now been demolished.The shelter and surrounding structures and sites were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

Full Description

A slight platform, the sole remnant of a bunker or shelter associated with the site of a twin searchlight emplacement to the north (TQ 87 NE 125). The emplacement was demolished after 1961 [1].

The earthwork remains of what is believed to be the shelter or bunker associated with and lying immediately to the south of the the twin WW1 searchlights (NMR Monument Number: 1542798). Both are situated on the coast, just above the beach immediately to the north-east of Grain Fort. The shelter appeared as a penannular earthen bank open to the south-west, measuring 15m x 11m. Both the shelter and searchlights have now been demolished.
The shelter and surrounding structures and sites were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (2)
