Title Snipe Wood, Walkover archaeological survey with some desk-based research
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2015

Abstract/Summary

A survey of Snipe Wood undertaken to ascertain whether there was anything of historic interest within the woodland. The wood lies between Pembury Village and Matfield Village. The wood in its present ownership has a complex and extensive boundary for its area. It is 13.7ha in extent, of which 9ha is designated ancient semi-natural, 1.2ha plantation on an ancient woodland site and 3.5ha is unclassified. Snipe Wood was walked systematically except for an area which was inaccessible due to a barbed wire fence (see Fig 8). The position of features were recorded. Cartographic evidence was also used, specifically 17th Century Maps (1801 ‘Mudge’, Tithe, 1813-19 OS), to compare to the current features and layout. Evidence for Herring’s/Keys Mill was found, including the pond bay and building rubble.
