The report details the results of an archaeological watching brief at Eastgate House. From the report: "This report summarises the results of an archaeological watching brief during the excavation of three geotechnical test pits at Eastgate House, Rochester, in May-July 2012. The report has been prepared to assist Medway Council in their submission of a planning application for access improvements to the building, which is Grade I listed." "Conclusion: The excavations did not encounter any convincing geological formation, but did establish the depth of the foundations of the north-west wall at the current north corner of the building. This and the north-east wall were confirmed to be a later build, with the original north-east end having been further out from the present one. The original end wall may have been located in TP3, but the masonry found here could have been an internal partition. The most remarkable discovery, however, came in TP1, where part of a massive arch was found. This must have been the main access for a cellar underlying the north-east wing of the house. A blocked cellar can just be seen from the existing one under the main part of the house, but it has not been possible thus far to establish whether this is the cellar to which the arch gave access, or another one to its south-west."
