Abstract/Summary

The report details the Archaeological Evaluation conducted by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in September 2015. From the report: "Summary: Between 10 and 12 September 2015, the Canterbury Archaeological Trust (CAT) undertook an archaeological evaluation of land within the grounds of the former Danley Middle School, Danley Road, Halfway Houses, Sheerness, Kent. Seven machine cut evaluation trenches were excavated. The only archaeological feature identified was an isolated field boundary or drainage ditch, of potential prehistoric date, thought to form part of an agricultural landscape associated with dispersed farmsteads. It falls within an area of the PDA that will not be impacted on by the proposed groundworks. There was no further evidence for prehistoric, Romano-British, or medieval activity. Cultivated horticultural or agricultural soils of nineteenth-century or later date were present, attesting to the PDA’s recent use as open farmland, but were not considered to be archaeologically significant."
