Abstract/Summary
Maritime Archaeology Limited commissioned iXSurvey to undertake a geophysical survey within the confines of Dover Harbour. The work was part of the historic environment assessment carried out for the wider Environmental Impact Assessment in support of the proposed Dover Harbour Terminal2 development. All areas to be investigated were surveyed utilising a high resolution multibeam echosounder, with side scan sonar used to identify debris and wrecks in the area of interest. A subbottom profiler was utilised to provide information as to the nature and composition of the subseabed soil conditions, and to locate any buried artefacts. Finally, a gradiometer was utilised to locate ferrous materials and cables.Within the dredge areas frequent scars are evident. These features vary in depth between approximately 0.15 to 0.60 metres. A further prominent feature is the wreck of the Spanish Prince, located at the western end of the southern breakwater. Faint remnants two further wrecks (War Sepoy and Minnie de Larrinaga) are also visible within the confines of the Western Entrance itself.
