Full Description

The site of some almshouses is depicted on post medieval mapping on the eastern side of Granville Dock. The land to the east of Granville Dock was consolidated and built upon by the mid 17th century as William Eldred's map which dates to 1641 shows the land divided into plots and owned or rented by various people.(1) The first and only map to show the Almshouses here is that by Foquet which dates to 1737, this map clearly labels them as 'Almshouses'.(2) Later maps also show this land and buildings in the area of the almshouses on Foquet's map, these include that by Hogben dating to 1769 (3) by Rennie dating to 1805 (4) and by Tucker, dating to 1833 (5) though none of these obviously depict these almshouses suggesting that they were present in 1737 but were short lived. By the later 19th century this area of land is no longer present as the tidal harbour is extended eastwards.
