Full Description

During an archaeological watching brief of geotechnical test pits which was undertaken in the St James’s area of Dover, and number of 19th and 20th century features and finds were recorded, including basements and occupation deposits. Three certain basements were uncovered during this investigation, one was revealed in test pits B and F and was 4.9m deep the second was located within test pit C, this consisted of a green painted concrete floor and brick walls, It is likely that this second basement belonged to Martin Walters’ garage. Further evidence of cellars was recovered in test pit G where a cellar fill of brick and chalk rubble was encountered alongside a thin chalk floor. Alongside these certain cellars, cellar fill was also located in test pits L, M, K and Q. A square/rectangular cess tank constructed of squared chalk blocks set in a dark grey mortar with a fill containing chalk lumps, peg tile, welsh slate and yellow stock brick fragments, was located within test pit E. Alongside these basements and cess tank, a number of layers were uncovered containing 19th century material, for example a silty clay layer in test pit D which contained frogged bricks and bottle glass.
