Full Description
Two layers containing Medieval material were located during test pitting in the St. James area of Dover. The first layer consisted of a deposit of soft grey loam, about 0.7m thick, containing frequent fragments of organic material such as twigs and stems, and occasional small and medium flint lumps and pebbles. A sharpened wooden stake about 0.06m in diameter was recovered from this layer but it was not ascertained if this had originally been driven vertically into this deposit. A few large sherds of sandy Medieval pottery, broadly datable to the 13th century, together with some animal bone, were also recovered from this layer. Sealing this layer was a layer consisting of a mid-dark grey silty clay with frequent small-medium chalk lumps, this deposit was about 0.4m thick. This layer produced several fragments of broken south-west English roofing slate, broadly datable to the Medieval period. (taken from source)(1)
