Summary

An archaeological evaluation carried out in 2008 discovered a pit, posthole and ditches filled with pottery dating to the late iron age / early Roman transition. The site was interpeted as representing a small number of features associated with a Roman field system.

Full Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out in 2008 at Dane Court Grammar School in advance of construction work. 10 evaluation trenches were excavated across the site. In the south-west area of the site in trench 4 a 2m-wide pit, posthole and ditch (aligned north-south and 1.7 m wide and 0.45 m deep) were found filled with pottery dating to the late iron age / early Roman transition. An east-west ditch was found in trench 5 that contained a single sherd of late iron age / early Roman pottery and some prehistoric flint Trench 10 contained three intercutting ditches which contained undiagnostic flint and an uncertain sherd. The site was interpeted as representing a small number of features associated with a Roman field system.(1)
