Full Description
A watching brief was carried out during geotechnical works (1) and a field evakuation was carried out (2), both in 2010. The slight evidence for activity post-dating the quarrying and quarry-filling on the site comprise one or two old ground surfaces. The later surface was capped by what was probably a pebble metalling, of unknown date, which was sealed, in turn, by modern deposits. Within TP10/1, contexts 111–109 appear to consist of demolition and levelling deposits relating to an earlier (and as yet unidentified) structure, perhaps fronting St Dunstan's Street. Sealing these, deposits 108 and 107 may relate to the construction of wall 105 though this remains unclear. Wall 105 itself almost certainly formed part of a structure, probably of nineteenth-century date, demolished in the twentieth century. (1)
The evaluation discovered what is suggested as being a range of late medieval / post medieval buildings fronting St Dunstan's Street, with evidence of walls, hearths, floors and occupation horizons. There was limited evidence of earlier structures though the excavators believed it highly likely that such evidence might be found at the site sealed by later deposits. (2)
