Full Description
During a watching brief undertaken by Pre Construct Archaeology during the resurfacing of a visitors car park at Dover Castle in 2009, an east-west wall was observed immediately south or a contemporary gully exposed during the same excavations. The remains of two entrances were identified along the wall marked by large sandstone flags (average size 2.0m x 0.30m and 3.0m x 0.50m) and associated rectangular sandstone supports (0.30m x 0.40m) presumably for gate posts. The edge of a north-south sandstone wall footing aligned exactly with the western edge of the Officers barrack building. During excavation of the open drain for the car park a further three north-south sandstone and mortar wall foundations were encountered. The location of these north-south walls corresponds exactly to those detailed on the Engineer’s plans for the New Officers’ Barrack. (1) These walls represent divisions between the yards known to have adjoined the rear of the Barrack building, they are all likely to be of the same phase of construction. (2)
