Full Description

Between the 21st and 25th of February 2011, Archaeology South-East conducted an archaeological evaluation at Spires Academy in Canterbury. Eighteen, thrity metre long trial trenches were excavated with trenches 2-5, 8, 14 and 15 revealing various archaeological features. Dating meterial was ephemeral but most features seem to be prehistoric or Roman.

Trench two contained two postholes along with three sherds of AD60-100 Roman pottery recovered from the silt topsoil. Trench three contained a sub-rectangular pit with a terminating gully in which two prehistoric sherds wre found dating to the late Bronze/early Iron age. Three staeholes were found in trench four, a linear gully in trench five, an east-west gully in trench eight, two postholes in trench fourteen and a circular pit in trench fifteen.

Finds were confined to two small quantities of pottery sherds from the prehistoric and Roman periods. Other information can be found in the environmental samples taken from the trenches. (1)
