Full Description
Archaeological field evaluation at Hudson Road which cut one evaluation trench that found evidence of Romano-British, medieval and late 18th-century Napoleonic archaeological activity.
Beneath modern made grounds and disturbances a sequence of archaeological deposits and features were revealed in the single evaluation trench. These included walls, floor srufaces, potential pits and ditches. Within the trench were pockets of small rounded, sub rounded and sub-angular small flints and flint pebbles. There was a cut feature over 4.05m wide and 0.45m deep with a single deposit of small flint inclusions, a large fragment of Roman roof tile was also uncovered but no other cultural material was found. Another pit-like feature was found directly to the east of the previously mentioned feature in which two small fragments of Roman tile was found.
A separate linear ditch-like feature ran across the eastern end of the trench and contained two fragments of medieal roof tile, these features were sealed in what is said could represent a buried soil horizon. Several walls were also found in this trench that seemed to makeup a possible building with perceived interior clay flooring fragments found alongside the remnants of an area of burning. However, the area of burning and clay floors were disturbed and removed during the machine excavation of the trench and so clear relationships between them have been lost due to this. (1)
