Full Description
Avranches flank is located on the re-entrant across the non-aligned eastern ditches (from the Iron-age defences). It terminates the northern end of the east ditch, above which it rises steeply; on the inside (to the NE)It was reconstructed in the 1790s along the line of the Medieval wall that linked Avranches Tower with Pencester Tower. It is closely linked to Avranches Tower. The Flank is constructed of brick and faced with stone and has two levels designed to cover the rebuilt ditch as far south as Ashford Flank. The lower tier of guns were mounted in casemates, the upper tier fired through embrasures in the parapet that that also provided space for infantry. At the western end, this level is approached from Bell Battery by a narrow vaulted tunnel under the earthworks. This passes the remains of Pencester Tower. Summarised from sources (1-2)
