Full Description

During excavations ahead of development at Springhead an area of early Bronze Age activity was identified. Within this two clusters of Beaker pits were uncovered. The first cluster comprised three or possibly four roughly circular pits, all containing dump deposits and burnt organic remains. The pits were between 1m and 2m apart and were quite small ranging between 0.6m and 1.05m in diameter and 0.26m and 0.4m in depth. They had steep, straight or concave sides and a concave or flat base. The dump deposits were rich in organic material including grain fragments. The pits contained a large quantity of worked flint including a broken arrowhead, scrapers in conjunction with large numbers of flakes and broken flakes. Beaker sherds were also located within the fills of several of the pits. A stone sealing layer of flint cobbles was located over one of the pits, this may represent a stone capping or perhaps the remains of a stone cairn or marker. (1)
