During excavations ahead of development at Springhead an area of early Bronze Age activity was identified. Within this a number of clay lined pits, many of which containing sherds of Beaker pottery, were uncovered. Three of these pits were uncovered in total, the first was circular with a diameter of 0.7 and depth of 0.12m, traces of a clay lining survived around its edge. The fill of this pit contained a fairly large assemblage of items including multiple worked flints (4 end scrapers, 2 blocked knives, a broken blade and a core hammerstone) alongside 14 sherds of beaker pottery and a quantity of hazelnut shell. This material had been placed at the base of a pit possibly as a deliberate deposit. The second pit was similar and had a substantial clay lining. It was 0.8m in diameter and 0.2m in depth. A quantity of beaker pottery had again been placed at the base. The third pit was small and shallow (0.4m in diameter and 0.05m deep) it was isolated in the north eastern area of the excavation. (1)
