Full Description
An archaeological evaluation consisting of 64 trenches was carried out in 2004 and found 310 features, mostly dating to the later Bronze Age/Early Iron Age though there was also a Romano-British pit or pit complex in the eastern part of the site. The features included pits and post holes, gullies and hearths. There was little dating evidence and the features could not easily be related one to another.
59 linear features or ditches were identified during the excavations; these were classed as linear features over 0.5m in width. 12 gullies were excavated - less than 0.5m in width. 11 large pits (over 2m in depth/diameter, and around 140 small pits or large post-holes (0.5-2m in diameter/depth), 11 post-holes (less than 0.5m in diameter/depth), alongside 9 hearths and/or areas of burnt flint and 39 pit complexes were also identified at the site.
Finds associated with features across the site included worked flint, burnt flint and carbonised material, alongside Late Bronze Age - Roman pottery sherds. (2)
An archaeological excavation carried out in 2005/6 found a possible ring-ditch containing middle to late bronze age material including pottery sherds from a Deverel-Rimbury jar. The ring-ditch consisted of a circular segemented ditch with an internal diameter of 6 m. There were no internal deposits or features which makes interpretation uncertain however. Adjacent to the ring-ditch was a series of ditches forming three sides of an enclosure.
A nearby palaeochannel contained Neolithic flint and Bronze Age flint and pottery. On the east side was a burnt mound. The associated small charcoal assemblage consisted of large, well preserved pieces of ash and oak, with less hazel and Pomoideae. A concentration on large relatively dense timbers is indicated, presumably due to a requirement for steady and sustained high temperatures. A sample of the charcoal returned a radiocarbon date of 2280–2030 cal BC (SUERC-40261, 3740±30 BP), falling around the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age transition.
A number of pits and hollows were found in the eastern part of the site containing Mid to Late Bronze Age pottery, grain (emmer wheat), burnt flint and worked flint.
A small amount of late bronze age/iron age pottery was also recovered. (1)
