Full Description
In 2010 and 2011 archaeological excavation close to the Postern Gate found 11th to 13th century pits, ditches and occupation deposits. The earliest remains were revealed in Trench 2 where soils, surfaces and features, probably pits or ditches, dated c. 1075–1275, are thought to have represented occupation within the rear ground of an occupied tenement lying outside the precincts of Christ Church Priory. A boundary wall, perhaps demarcating part of the southern extent of the monastic precincts, may have been present to the east of Postern Gate since the twelfth/thirteenth century. The wall is thought to have been successively re-built over the following centuries.(1)
