Monument record TR 15 NE 1872 - Late iron age / Roman remains, south-west transept, Canterbury Cathedral

Summary

In 2009/10 archaeological excavation found evidence of late iron age and Roman occupation outside the south-west transept of Canterbury Cathedral. The earliest phase was from the iron age / Roman transition and consisted of open ground and possible fence lines. In the late 1st century AD a substantial masonry building was constructed with sandstone block foundations. The building was subsequently demolished and the area returned to open ground. A north-west to south-east metalled street was constructed in the late 2nd century and may have continued in use to the 5th century.
