Full Description
A magnetometry survey carried out in 2015 found extensive features interpreted as representing ditches, enclosures and pits west of Cliff View road. The features were not excavated so could not be dated. (1)
The identified anomolies include a series of possible enclosures which can be associated with remains identified previous excavations within the area of immediately adjacent to the east. Directly to the south, excavations were undertaken ahead of construction of the East Kent Access Road identified substantial archaeological remains. In Zone 11, this comprised several ditches, gullies and pits were interpreted as representing an agricultural settlement spanning the Middle to Late Bronze Age periods. A series of enclosures dating to the Iron Age was also located, spanning at least four phases. The complex of linear features at 5028 is likely to represent a continuation of this settlement and it is possible that a northern boundary to this activity can be identified within this dataset. However, it is impossible to comment on the phasing and date of these features and it is likely that a similarly complicated palimpsest is present within Area G. An Iron Age settlement was recorded in the north-eastern extent of Area G during the construction of the Monkton Gas Pipeline. It is likely therefore that many of the ditchlike features in the north of Area G are associated with enclosures of this date; indeed recti-linear enclosure 5024 may well represent the continuation of the features excavated during the construction of the gas pipeline and recorded as an occupation layer approximately 20 m in length and a number of pits. Aerial photographs have also shown crop marks indicating barrows, enclosures and a field system and the geophysical survey results are likely to correlate with this information. For example, the two concentric ring-ditches at 5023 confirm the presence of a round barrow. To the south of this there are a series of sub-circular features which are
interpreted as possible sunken feature buildings. The position of this close to a round barrow may also be of significance and suggest that more extensive remains may exist in this area. Furthermore, as burials are generally poorly represented in geophysical survey it is possible that discreet graves and/or cemeteries could be present but not identified within the survey results. Enclosures and pits of Iron Age/Roman date were visible as cropmarks in HEA 33362/033 13-JUL-2017 and EARTH.GOOGLE.COM XX-MAR-2022. These features include pits amongst fragments of rectilinear enclosures partially identified by geophysical survey described by authority (1) close to the modern roadway, and a curvilinear enclosure immediately to the south with a fragment of ditch on its south side. These features were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (2-3)
