Full Description
Features including wo wells, eight pits, a brick lined drain capped with sandstone rubble blocks, twenty-eight postholes, five ditches, and one gully were identified during a watching brief in 2017. Features dating to the 19th century (pits, the two wells, a cistern or trough, ditches, post holes, a gully and a hedgerow) were related to the possible temporary work camp and associated buildings, which provided housing and amenities for the workers of the brickworks adjacent to the south. The housing foundations themselves were not identified, suggesting that they were constructed on the ground surface and did not leave traces after demolition. 20th century features (pits) were related to the conversion of the possible temporary work camp to allotments.
Related finds included a "complete glass soda bottle of later 19th-century type from a manufacturer in Tunbridge Wells, and two pieces of Victorian ‘moralising china’ with Biblical quotations
and ‘improving’ maxims". (1)
